Argentina's dollar rates, explained simply

Argentina has several dollar exchange rates at the same time. Here's the difference:

Official

The price set by banks, referenced to Banco Nación. It's what you get at a bank branch.

Blue

The informal-market dollar, traded in so-called «cuevas» or by street changers («arbolitos»). It isn't legal, but it's a widely followed reference.

MEP

Also called «dólar bolsa». Obtained by buying and selling bonds from a bank or brokerage account. Fully legal.

Card

What Argentines pay when buying in dollars with their local card: the official rate plus taxes. It doesn't apply to foreign tourists.

Crypto

The price of digital dollars (stablecoins like USDT or USDC) on crypto platforms. Trades 24/7.

Tips for tourists in Argentina

The essentials to make your money go further and travel with peace of mind.

Where to exchange

Use authorized exchange houses or banks and ask for a receipt. Avoid changing money with strangers on the street: it isn't legal and it's where counterfeit bills circulate most.

Watch out for fake bills

Check the watermark, security thread and paper texture, especially on high-value notes. Count your money in front of the teller before leaving.

Using cards

Foreign cards are accepted almost everywhere and are usually charged near the MEP rate. ATMs charge high fees and have low withdrawal limits.

Tipping

In restaurants it's customary to leave around 10%, ideally in cash. The «cubierto» on the bill is a table-service charge, not the tip.

Frequently asked questions

How often are the rates updated?

Every time you open the page we query public sources. Dollar rates update several times a day during market hours; other currencies update once a day. You always see the date and time of the last update.

Which dollar rate should I use as a tourist?

If you bring cash, the reference is the blue rate or whatever an authorized exchange house offers. If you pay with a foreign card, you're usually charged close to the MEP rate. Open tourist mode to see the difference with your own prices.

Why are the real, guaraní or euro calculated through the dollar?

Because almost the whole Argentine exchange market runs on US dollars. We first convert the currency to dollars at the international rate, then to pesos at the rate you choose. That's what exchange houses do in practice.

What if the rate sources fail?

We show the last rates saved on your device, with a clear notice and their date, so you know they may be out of date.

Do you use the buy or the sell price?

If you sell foreign currency to get pesos, we use the buy price (what you're paid). If you buy foreign currency with pesos, we use the sell price (what you're charged).

Is the blue market legal?

No: the blue market is informal. We show it because it's a widely used reference, but we recommend always exchanging at banks or authorized exchange houses.

Do I need to sign up or pay?

No. The converter is free and works as soon as you open it, no sign-up.

Important note. Rates shown are for reference only and come from public sources (DolarApi.com and ExchangeRate-API). We are not an exchange house and do not provide financial advice. The final rate depends on each bank, exchange house or platform, which apply their own prices and fees.

How much is this in my currency?

Type the price in pesos you saw on the menu or in the shop.

What's the best way to pay?

Foreign cards are usually charged at a rate close to MEP. It's convenient and safe; check whether your bank charges foreign transaction fees.
